Chaos broke out in Ghana’s Parliament on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, after members of the Minority Caucus abandoned their seats and gathered at the centre of the chamber.
The disturbance began during tense exchanges over the decision to declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant, a move the Minority insists is unlawful and improperly carried out.
Earlier, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga had dismissed what he called the Minority’s continuous and planned protest. He stated that he was not surprised by their efforts to stall parliamentary work.
The Bawku Central MP accused the Minority of intentionally disrupting proceedings because of the dispute surrounding the Kpandai seat. He argued that the caucus had turned to loud interruptions and unruly conduct to prevent the Speaker from delivering key rulings.
Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh sharply rejected this claim, warning that government business would continue to encounter setbacks until the Kpandai issue is resolved.
Moments after his statement, tensions rose sharply.
Although the Speaker attempted to carry on with proceedings, Minority MPs intensified their demonstration, standing up, moving into the centre of the chamber and chanting in protest.
Their sudden action sparked a chaotic confrontation as MPs from both sides pushed toward the middle of the floor.
GhanaWeb cameras recorded dramatic scenes inside the chamber as lawmakers clashed in a heated standoff. Papers were seen flying across the room, and the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev Ntim Fodjour, was captured shouting angrily at a colleague.
