Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ellen Ama Daaku, has stated that former President John Agyekum Kufuor is under no obligation to align with every policy introduced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. She added that Kufuor’s own administration also faced notable shortcomings, so it would be inaccurate to claim that his era was without fault.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on December 9, 2025, Ama Daaku noted that President Kufuor governed at a different time and acted according to his personal convictions. She acknowledged that Ghanaians still value his achievements and his significant role in national development, yet his time in office, like that of any leader, came with its own difficulties and missteps.
She stressed that both Kufuor and Akufo-Addo must be judged separately based on their individual actions and performance while in office. Expecting Kufuor to support every decision Akufo-Addo made, she said, is unrealistic and ignores the differences in their approaches to leadership.
According to her, Kufuor’s contributions are still recognised fifteen years after he left office, but that does not mean every decision he made was flawless. She explained that no administration is free from challenges, adding that disagreement between leaders is normal and healthy.
Her remarks follow Kufuor’s recent criticism of the Akufo-Addo administration. He argued that several troubling policy choices contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s loss in the 2024 general elections. During an appearance on The Delay Show, Kufuor revealed that he struggled to grasp the reasons behind major decisions such as the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, the National Cathedral project and the Power Distribution Services deal. He mentioned that he was never consulted before these policies were introduced, which further deepened his concerns.
Kufuor went on to say that the NPP’s victory in 2016 was strongly supported by the legacy of his own administration. According to him, the campaign that elected Akufo-Addo relied heavily on the record he left behind. He added that the government began well, but many things changed once Akufo-Addo settled into office, creating outcomes he did not fully understand.
